There is note on Citrix XenServer download page regarding ISO image that image should be burn onto CD before installation use. However if you are going to install XenServer 5 on HP, Dell or IBM blade servers then you can directly mount ISO image on blade server to proceed with Citrix XenServer installation. In my lab i am using HP blade server to install XenServer 5 so i started my installation without CDROM.I started Citrix XenServer 5 installation but after running installation for several minutes i received this error:

Some Packaged appeared damaged. These were dom0fs.

I restarted Citrix XenServer 5 installation again but it failed with same error related to dom0fs package error.I tried XenServer 5 download again but i received same error again and again. I searched online but didn’t find much information. After several failures i felt like giving up but then i decided to give it a last try so i tried downloading XenServer but this time instead of using Citrix download manager i decided to use manual download. It turned out there was error with the Citrix download manager because when i downloaded ISO manually and Citrix XenServer installation worked fine without any package error. I hope Citrix will fix this issue soon.

After downloading the Cirtix virtual desktop agent on Windows XP guest virtual machine when i started running XdsAgent installer I was greeted with this error message –

This install requires that .NET Framework 3.5 is installed. Install .NET Framework 3.5 from the original Citrix Virtual Desktop agent media (in the support\DotNet35 folder) or download it from http://www.microsoft.com. “

As listed in error message i was able to browse the .NET framewok in Citrix Desktop Delivery controller CDROM, so i started installing .NET Framework but then again i was greeted with another message. This time .NET installation failed because setup couldn’t locate Microsoft Windows installed 3.1 on Wndows vista desktop. I cound’t find Microsoft windows installer on Citrix installer CDROM so i jumped to Microsoft download site and searched for Windows installer 3.1.

You can download Windows Installer 3.1 Redistributable (v2) from Microsoft website, download size is 2.5 MB

Just to summarize if you are planning to install Citrix virtual Desktop agent on Windows Vista install these pre-requisite in following order :

1. First Install the Microsoft Windows installer 3.1 on Citrix Windows XP virtual machine.

2. After installing Microsoft Windows installer locate the .NET Framework 3.5 which comes with Citrix Desktop Delivery installer CDROM and install .NET framework. After finishing .NET Framework installation on Citrix Xendesktop Windows XP virtual machine proceed with reboot.

3. Once you are done with above 2 requirement you can install Citrix virtual desktop agent on Windows vista virtual machine.

Citrix XenServer 5.0.0 doesn’t come with any graphical user interface to manage XenServer virtual machines. To manage Citrix Xenserver virtual machines you would need to install Citrix XenCenter client.

On Citrix downloads web page i couldn’t find Citrix XenCenter download.

Citrix Xencenter client is Windows based graphical user interface that can be installed on Windows XP, Vista and Windows server 2003 workstations. I have installed the Citrix XenServer on HP proliant server so i called HP support to check on where i can download Citrix XenCenter client. Here is why i prefer HP servers their support is really good, as expected HP Support promptly directed me to Citrix XenCenter download location.
