Bridged networking doesn’t work but NAT works fine in VMware workstatrion 6 on Windows Vista ?

On my Windows Vista HP Pavilion desktop i decided to upgrade VMware workstation from version 5.5 to version 6.

I managed to get this part working but soon I noticed my guest virtual machines running RHEL5 and fedora 9 lost network connections. I couldn’t get network to work in RHEL 5 and Fedora 9 guest, they were working fine in VMware workstation 5.5. My Windows vista desktop has two network/Ethernet card – one is NVIDIA nForce networking controller and second network card is HP 802.11b/g Wireless network card. I am using 802.11b/g wireless card as primary network card on my Windows vista desktop. I thought there is some driver issues with VMware workstation 6 and Windows vista for wireless network card. For testing I tried changing network connection from Bridged to NAT, which is used to share the host’s IP address and to my surprise network connection worked fine.

Troubleshooting Bridged networking in VMware workstation 6 on Windows Vista

To solve this puzzle where my network connection wouldn’t work in Bridged mode but they worked fine in NAT mode on my Windows vista desktop I started looking to VMware workstation 6 networking options. After spending some time i looked into virtual network settings. First thing I noted on VMware workstation 6 that second tab which is for Atomic Bridging in virtual network settings was check off. I checked it as on and selected HP 802.11b/g wireless Network Adapter as the primary network card.

Secondly i changed VMnet0 network interface in Host Virtual Network Mapping from NVIDIA nForce networking controller to HP 802.11b/g wireless Network Adapter from pull down menu. This was obvious that VMware workstation 6 installed picked NVIDIA nForce network adapter as primary VMware host network card.

After making these changed I restarted network serviced on both RHEL 5 and Fedora 9 severs .BINGO that was it , changing these settings I was able to fix Bridged networking problem in VMware workstation 6 on my Windows Vista desktop.
