Cannot install VMware View 3 agent on Windows XP/Vista VM

For enabling Windows XP/Vista VMware virtual machines to be accessible using VMware View portal you would need to install VMware View agents on the base (master) Windows VM used in desktop pool.

I ran into some permission issues while installing VMware View agent on base Windows XP image. If you are unable to install VMware view agent then you are definitely missing some of the requirements

For installing VMware View 3 agent on Windows XP/Vista virtual machines running on VMware ESX make sure you have latest VMware tools installed. While installing VMware View 3 agent on Windows XP virtual machine (vm) i received error “you need administrative privileges to install this software” even though i was logged in as Active directory domain administrator. This is more of Windows Security issue where vmware view active directory domain administrator accounts needs to be added to Windows XP local administrator group to install the VMware View agent software. If you cannot install VMware View 3 agent on Windows XP vm because of same error then try adding active directory administrator account to local administrator group.

1. Login in to Windows XP virtual machines using local administrator account on Windows XP vm.

2. Open Windows computer management by running compmgmt.msc from Run

3. Select Groups under Local users and Groups and add VMware View administrator active directory account. This VMware view administrator account has to be same account you use for VMware View Manager server.

Solved: Cannot find network card in Windows XP guest on VMware ESX

I learned some tricks while doing my first Windows XP guest OS installation on VMware ESX 3.5 server. I managed to install the Windows XP virtual machine you can read some solution here if your Windows XP setup cannot find the hard disk during installation. When my Windows XP installation completed i run into another driver issue – well this time i cannot get network card to work on my newly installed Windows XP guest machine.

I searched on VMware forums and learned that by default Windows XP guest virtual machines installation in VMware ESX find Intel network adapter – e1000. There is two way you can get solve this network driver issue on Windows XP virtual machine on VMware ESX. You can download the Intel network adapter driver for Windows XP and install it to get the network card working.

However i selected second work around by editing the Windows XP virtual machine (vmx) configuration file to solve this error.

1. Login to your VMware ESX server using command line ssh and login as root

2. Before changing Windows XP virtual machine configuration file i prefer to shutdown the VM. Locate the Windows XP guest virtual machine configuration file (.vxm) and use your favorite editor nano or vi to edit the file. Personally I prefer vi, I can do things lot faster using vi.

3. Change the Windows XP network card adapter driver from e1000 to vlance (AMD Ethernet adapter).

I followed these steps and started the VM – my network card came up fine in Windows XP guest OS.

Solved: setup can’t find hard drive in Windows XP Pro install on ESX 3.5

This is my first Windows XP professional installation on VMware ESX 3.5 where i started the installation using VMware virtual center client. I have to add some BIOS boot delay to select local PC boot device CDROM. I managed to get into BIOS and selected CDROM as boot device for Windows XP professional virtual desktop. I get into installation screen and hit enter to begin the XP professional installation but then i get the error message that setup cannot find the hard drive.

This happened because Windows XP professional doesn’t have the driver for LSI Logic SCSI adapter. I had created Windows XP professional virtual machine by selecting typical option in virtual machine configuration. That was the first step you should be aware of when you create Windows XP virtual machine. I was able to solve the hard drive issue in Windows XP professional install on VMware ESX server in following steps:

1. Make sure when you create the VM you choose custom under VMware ESX virtual machine configuration wizard, which will then ask you to select the SCSI adapter type. You have to select the BusLogic driver in VMware ESX Windows XP configuration wizard. If you have already created the Windows XP professional virtual machine on VMware ESX server then you can edit .vmx file to change the SCSI adapter type to Buslogic. Surprisingly even after changing SCSI adapter type to Buslogic Windows XP professional setup can’t find the hard drive.

2. You have to download the Buslogic SCSI driver (floppy image) for Windows XP professional on VMware site.

Download Windows guest operating system driver from VMware. This driver works with Windows XP, Windows 2000 and Windows 2003 servers. Later on I find out that there is Windows XP Buslogic driver available in VMware ESX default install under floppy datastore , you can mount the floppy image from existing datastore by selecting “Connect on PowerOn” box after you booted the Windows XP.

3. Started the Windows XP installation by powering on the VM, When prompted to add ‘Additional SCSI Drivers‘, press F6 (Function key button). Connect your VMware ESX floppy disk ISO (flp) image of the Buslogic SCSI controller driver , then press the ‘S‘ key to specify an additional device. The Windows XP installation process should now read this ISO file and will detect the controller drivers. Press the ‘Enter‘ key to continue. The Windows XP Professional installation this time finds (detected) the hard drive without any issue.

This is how i solved the disk driver issues when my Windows XP professional installation couldn’t detect the hard drive. I hope this will someone having similar issue.
