How to Enable SSH in ESXi 3.5 (ESX 3.5i)Update 2

VMware ESXi 3.5 is bare metal Hypervisor that can be downloaded for free to run Production applications. You can install free version of VMware ESXi 3.5 on underutilized server to run multiple virtual machines. VMware ESXi’s 32MB disk footprint is a fraction of the size of a general purpose operating system, some of the new HP, IBM and Dell server comes with pre-installed version of VMware ESXi 3.5. If your server doesn’t have pre-installed version of VMware ESX 3i you can download it from VMware download site to install on your server hardware. By default VMware ESXi 3.5 SSH comes pre-installed but not enabled, however SSH services can be enabled from ESXi 3.5 Console .Here is how you can enable SSH direct logins on you VMWare ESX 3i server :

Steps to enable SSH on VMware ESXi 3.5

1. First login to VMware ESXi 3.5 server Console by pressing ALT-F1 keys

2. On Console you will not see any prompt yet, just type unsupported. You will not see your typed word “unsupported” on screen. Keep going and hit enter, at this point you will see Password on you VMware ESX 3i Console.Enter your root password next to Password: prompt.

3. Once logged in change your working directory to /etc/ , using vi editor open inetd.conf file and search for line starting with #ssh.Remove # sign marked in front of ssh and save the file by pressing ESC key and then typing :wq.

4. Next using ps –aef |grep inetd command find the process id for inted service. Restart the ined service to reread the inetd.conf file for change you made for SSH using Kill –HUP <pi dinted>

That’s all you need to do , you should be able to SSH onto your ESXi 3.5 server now.I have attached a video showing step by step instruction on how to enable SSH on VMware ESXi server, i have borrowed this from vm-ware blog.
