How to find Dell PowerEdge server type and serial number from command line in VMware ESX

If you are working on server located in remote data center and you have no one to help you in reading the Dell server serial number from the system then you will find it useful to learn how you can find the server model and serial number from the command line.

Have you ever run into situation when you need to open support call with Dell and all of sudden you get into this flurries of question – what is the server model , what is server type and finally do you have Dell system serial number . You need to have at least the system serial number if you are opening a hardware call to replace failed CPU, memory, disk drive, SAN adapters, and Ethernet card issues.

On Dell servers running VMware ESX you don’t need to wonder anymore there is a single command you can run from command line to find the Dell server model and Dell server serial number.

Here I am giving an example where I am running rack mounted Dell Power edge R905 with VMware ESX:

esxhost99 # esxcfg-info |grep Serial

|—-Serial Number……………………………………..8TT0YU9

In this example I am running VMware ESX 3.0 on a Dell PE R905 server, for finding serial number from command line you just have to run esxcfg-info command then using grep you can search and display the serial number. This will help you if you are working from home or located far away from data center and off course nobody around to take a walk to look into back of the server then this command is very handy, i am sure in Linux you can find this out. I have to look up and find that out at some point.

To find Dell server model you can use this handy command as mentioned here:

esxhost99 #esxcfg-info |grep I product

|—-Product Name………………………………………PowerEdge R905

In this case Dell server model is Power Edge R905.
