The symptoms when trying to install were the same. Including the messages on the screen up to the screen going blank. The differences that I noticed, after installing text based, were the 1) the Driver listed said "radon" (sp) instead of "ati" 2) there weren't lines for "VendorName" or "BoardName" nor 3) an Option for “dpms”. The changes to /etc/X11/xorg.conf file did however fix the problem and allowed me to get init5 to work. Thanks.
