Cygwin provides Unix-like environment with X-Windows and command line interface on Windows Vista,XP.Recently i have installed Windows 7 ultimate beta release on my old Dell laptop. Since i am command liner i decided to install Cywgin on my Windows 7 machine.

Cygwin install on Windows 7 Ultimate:

1. From Windows 7 Ultimate launch internet explorer and go to Cygwin website.

2.Start Cygwin setup by clicking on “install or update now“.Windows 7 will give you security warning message saying “File Download – Security Warning”

Do you want to run or save this file ?

Windows 7 will give you User Account Control warning message when you Click on Run.

Do you want to allow following program from an unknown Publisher to make change son this computer.

3.Click on Run to proceed with Cygwin install, under download Source in Cygwin setup select “install from Internet. Select one of the mirro ftp site to start the cygwin download on Windows 7.

4.At the end of Setup ? select create icon on desktop

I am amazed with the Cygwin install on Windows 7, i thought i am going to see tons of errors but i didn’t receive any error. To get things cooking click on Cygwin desktop Shortcut and enjoy running your favorite command ….guess what … ls or ls -la . This will test if you can locate all your UNIX/Linux command utlities binaries on your Windows 7 Cygwin platform
