What is iSCSI in VMware ESX

iSCSI in VMware ESX

A SCSI transport protocol, enabling access to storage devices over standard TCP/IP networks. In VMware ESX environment iSCSI can be used if HBA’s are not available on physical server running as VMware ESX host.

SCSI transport protocol on VMware ESX server:

-Maps SCSI block-oriented storage over TCP/IP

-Mappig is Similar to mapping SCSI over Fibre Channel

- In VMware ESX environment “Initiators“, such as an iSCSI HBA in an ESX host Server, which then send SCSI commands to “targets”, located in iSCSI storage systems.
